This will seem like an odd way to
begin a review, but indulge me
for a moment. Two-and-a-half
listens through the new CD by The
Daniel Doss Band and I found
myself thankful that God gave us
four gospels in the New Testament—four
diverse voices telling the same story of
Jesus. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John each
give us their unique emphases and distinctive nuances. How cool is that? That
moment of spontaneous gratitude was
birthed as I entered the sonic and lyrical
world of DDB’s songs; for, the more I
listened, the more I kept thinking of
Mark’s Gospel, and it’s un-distilled, unrefined and unabated presentation of the
life of Jesus. We need all four of the gospel
voices, but this generation seems particularly poised to listen to Mark’s authentic
no-hype cry. That’s where DDB comes in.
Mark wrote his gospel using “street
Greek,” koine, the language of the people.
Doss writes his songs the same way, but
not in Greek. He presents the truth of the
gospel, plainly, simply and passionately.
There’s not a lot of creative poetry, catchy
titles, or new theological insights on this
CD, but there’s an abundance of sincere,
organic, clear truth, and that’s why I love
this project.
And as in Mark’s gospel, the DDB delivers their message with urgency and energy.
Daniel and his mates are great players, and
listening to this CD makes me look forward to experiencing a live performance,
make that a worship encounter with the
living God. Ed Cash delivered his usual
remarkable job of translating a writer’s
heart and art with just the right amount
of production, adding his own voice and
guitar work, as well.
If you’ve been a long-time subscriber to Song DISCovery ®, Daniel Doss Band is no
surprise. For the past two years as an independent artist, he’s been leaking songs to
SD subscribers on a fairly regular basis. And we’ve been excited about whatever we’ve
gotten from him. Well, it seems he’s been picked up, and his debut is excellent
congregational music for your services of worship. Don’t miss this release from
one of Song DISCovery’s favorite artists.
